Bogotá, Colombia – Following the release of ISO 41001 (Facility management – management systems – requirements with guidance for use) on 15 April 2018, the facility management technical committee for the International Organization for Standardization (ISO/TC 267) met from 9 – 11 May 2018 to consider the emerging questions from the international facility management community.
Some of the burning questions included:
- How do management systems, such as ISO 41001, Facility management and ISO 55001, Asset management, complement each other?
- What is the value of ISO 41001 to the industry?
- How does an organisation get accredited to ISO 41001? How long does accreditation take?
- What is the road map ahead for facility management (FM) standards?
ISO/TC 267 has two standing ad hoc groups that work to advance the purpose and work of the technical committee (TC).
The remit of ISO/TC 267/AG01, Facility management – Roadmap, is to consider the future of FM standards development. During two days of meetings in Bogotá, Development of facility management strategy and Influencing behaviours for improved facility outcomes and user experience, two proposals were finalised and will be forwarded to the TC for consideration by mid-June 2018. The group will prioritise and further develop proposals on the following topics:
- Understanding facility management as a key business enabler
- Good practice in government facility management procurement
- Guidance on integrated management and delivery of services
- Development and implementation of facility management policy
- Development of facility management plans
- Work environment and workplace
These topics and any resulting standards will be aimed at improving facility management for all stakeholders of the built environment and, ultimately, enhancing the quality of life.
The second group, ISO/TC 267/AG02, Facility management – Communications, is tasked with communicating the work of the TC to the broader community and promoting the adoption of its output through channels such as conferences, articles, social media and its website.
The output from the meeting will result in a position paper in partnership with ISO/TC251, Asset Management outlining the benefits of ISO 41001, Facility management – Management systems – Requirements with guidance for use and ISO 55001, Asset management – Requirements and how they might complement rather than oppose each other.
In its seventh year, TC267 is pleased to be able to report the publication of three standards, including ISO 41001, and a technical report. Committee members are not slowing down, and FM professionals are encouraged to get involved via their national standards bodies and ensure that future FM standards continue to evolve for the benefit of the industry and FM stakeholders worldwide.
